Although almonds are thought to have originated in western or central Asia, by 4000BC, they had spread extensively and have been widely used for both culinary and other purposes for thousands of years. Almonds are high in fat and carbohydrate making them valuable as a buid-up food for those who are underweight. They have the highest protein content of any nut. In addition, they are rich in vitamin E (25 mg per 100 g) and vitamin B2 (0.80 mg per 100 g) and supply good amount of other B vitamins. Besides, they are rich in minerals: iron (4.3 mg per 100 g), magnesium (275 mg per 100 g), potassium (728 mg per 100 g), phosphorus (474 mg per 100 g) and especially high in calcium (248 mg per 100 g). They supply a good amount of copper: (1.1 mg per 100 g) and manganese (2.5 mg per 100 g). Almonds contain a high degree of oleic acid, which is believed to be the ingredient in olive oil that protects against heart disease.
